Botox Questions and Answers
Most people have heard of the Botox cosmetic procedure, but they’re unsure of the process and how it works. We’ve included a comprehensive question-and-answer list to help you make an informed decision.
What Is the Difference Between Botox and Dysport?
Botox and Dysport are both FDA-approved neurotoxins used to relax muscles for three to four months. Botox is a more concentrated substance that takes five to seven days to begin to show results. By contrast, Dysport’s smaller molecular structure reveals changes within two to three days. Both products reach full potential within two weeks.
What Is the Difference Between Botox and Filler?
Botox is used to treat the fine lines and wrinkles created by muscle movement in specific facial areas, such as the forehead and around the eyes. Filler, on the other hand, adds volume by plumping lips and filling in cheeks.
How Many Units of Botox Do I Need?
While the exact number of units varies by client and the desired outcome, the number of units required to achieve specific results can range from 15 to 65.
Do Botox Injections Hurt?
Botox and Dysport injections are administered by very small needles and are intended to be relatively painless. Most people report that the treatment is no worse than an ant bite. That said, the experienced medical team at Couture Med Spa in Alafaya realizes that each patient has different anxiety and pain levels. We offer an anesthetic cream to numb affected areas and help ensure optimal comfort and improve your experience.
Does Botox Affect Facial Expressions?
We assess your expectations during your initial consultation and adjust the dosage or the number of units injected based on the amount of movement you want. One of the concerns new Botox and Dysport patients have is the inability to visually express emotions. An effective compromise is to ask the clinician for a lower dosage. As a result, you may notice the lines aren’t completely eliminated; however, you still maintain some facial expression. Couture Med Spa’s trained providers’ goal is to create a natural, youthful appearance.
Where Is Botox Injected?
We can focus on one or multiple areas of the face, including:
- Glabella, the area of skin above the nose and between the eyebrows
- Crow’s feet around the eyes
- Nose, bunny scrunch lines
- Puffiness under eyes
- Masseters, or jaw muscles
- Depressor Anguli Oris muscles, those around the mouth causing a downturned appearance
- Platysma bands in the neck
- Hyperhidrosis, excess sweating in the armpits
Do Antibiotics Interfere With Botox Treatments?
During your initial consultation with one of our certified aesthetic clinicians, we’ll discuss the medications you’re currently taking, including antibiotics and their potential effect on the Botox procedure. Amoxicillin, used to treat dental abscesses and chest infections, is not contraindicated for the neurotoxin.
However, two classes of antibiotics can react to and impact the results of the Botox treatment by reducing neuromuscular transmission.
- Aminoglycosides: Including streptomycin, neomycin and gentamicin
- Fluoroquinolones: Including moxifloxacin, levofloxacin and ciprofloxacin
Can Botox Treat Medical Conditions?
Botox treatments have been effective in treating migraines, acne, neck spasms and an overactive bladder. However, with the exception of hyperhidrosis, Couture Med Spa administers Botox specifically for aesthetic purposes.
Which Cosmetic Concerns Can Be Treated With Botox?
Botox is a noninvasive procedure typically used to reduce facial wrinkles, such as crow’s feet, frown lines and under-eye puffiness. Injections also effectively reduce platysma bands in the neck and hyperhidrosis, or excessive underarm sweating.

What Should I Expect During a Botox Treatment?
Prior to your procedure, we schedule a consultation with one of our licensed nurse practitioners and physician assistants to discuss your areas of concern and treatment goals.
At the time of the Botox procedure, we answer any questions and ensure your comfort. The treatment typically lasts less than five minutes. Our highly trained aesthetic clinicians use very small needles to inject your target site with the prescribed dosage of botulinum toxin, the FDA-approved injectable commonly referred to as Botox. While most patients find the injections painless, you may request an anesthetic cream to numb the area before the procedure.
When Can I Expect Results, and How Long Will They Last?
You can expect to see the results of a Botox injection in five to seven days, and Dysport’s visible signs typically appear in two to three days. That said, the maximum results for both products generally hit their peak within two weeks.
The FDA’s longevity approval for Botox and Dysport is four months; however, age, lifestyle and the number of units may impact how long the treatments last. The majority of patients return for follow-up injections within three to four months.
